We all know that Netflix has seen major success from its original programming such as House of Cards, Orange is the New Black, etc. Following in its footsteps, SnapChat will be giving users an original series. Shortly after SnapChat rolled out its new Discover feature, AT&T announced that it would be creating a scripted TV series to appear on SnapChat. The series, SnapperHero, is based on superheroes and features Vine, YouTube and other social media celebs.
There’s no doubt that like the other content displayed with Discover, this new series will feature advertisements. But as Amber pointed out, these ads are swipe-able and not too annoying.
I’ll be honest, I’ve had my doubts about the ability of SnapChat to survive in this constantly changing and social world. A year ago, SnapChat was barely on my radar, and I assumed, a year or two from now, the same would be true. However, if SnapChat has proven one thing, it’s that it’s willing to adapt. SnapChat stories gave youth another social outlet on which to constantly update their peers, and now Discover has allowed the app to break into the media world. I think it is especially telling that a group of producers decided to develop a TV series exclusively for SnapChat. This proves that the media world has faith in the app’s ability to not only survive, but make a profit.
It seems that SnapChat is here to stay…unless, of course, our parents download it, and then it’ll become as irrelevant as Facebook.
